[NON-CKS] Research Assistant Opportunity for LA Speaks - Korean-American English
Are you a Korean-American from Los Angeles and want to gain experience in research?
We are conducting a project on the languages spoken in Los Angeles and, as part of the project, we would like to investigate Korean-American English. We would like to know (1) whether there is such a things as "Korean-American English" and (2) whether Korean-Americans living in different LA neighborhoods share similar linguistic features.
We are currently hiring undergraduate research assistants to collect speech data on Korean-American English.
The RAs will be paid $15/hr, approximately 10 hrs/wk, for 6 months (two quarters).
RA Duties:
- Recruit Korean interviewees living in Los Angeles County. Recruits will fall into one of two groups: (1) Korean-Americans who were born and raised in Los Angeles County, or (2) long-term immigrants from Korea who have lived in the same neighborhood for more than 5 years.
- Interview them (in English) and audio-/video-record the interviews
- Transcribe the interviews
Required Qualifications:
- Korean-American born and raised in Los Angeles County.
- From a Korean community or have access to members of Korean communities in Los Angeles County
- Sociable and have excellent communication skills
- Detail-oriented
- (Experience in speech transcription is a plus)
- (Knowledge in linguistics is a plus)
