Workshop Description
High school students of all proficiency levels of Japanese (novice, heritage, advanced) are invited to participate in a workshop that will prepare them for anime voiceover.
Participants will receive 3 days of training for voice-over from the instructor (Professor Asako Hayashi-Takakura) and guest speakers in Japan. Students will present their projects at the end of the workshop, and the winner will receive a free registration to attend the Anime Expo (AX) that will be held in Los Angeles, July 1-4, 2022.
Format: Classes will be held via zoom.
Instructors:
- Asako Hayashi Takakura - Lecturer of Japanese (UCLA) with 20 years experience teaching Japanese with Anime and pop culture.
- Koji Oikawa - Japanese language educator, working with Japanese language learners all over the world. Selected as one of News Week Japan’s Top 100 Japanese People the World Respects.
Curriculum (summer 2022)
Day 1
- Introduction: Basic practice of pronunciation (30 words and 20 phrases challenge)
- Characteristics of the Japanese language phonology: mora and intonation
- Watch some anime voiceover videos and learn how to record their voice over the video clip
Day 2
- Recording and listening practice
- Lecture/training by an anime voice acting specialist
- Final practice and recording
Day 3
- Voice-over competition
- Award Ceremony
